AFL-CIO Convention Watch

The big AFL-CIO Convention begins tomorrow here in Chicago. It’s been billed as the showdown between a set of dissident unions (the Change to Win Coalition) seeking more energetic organizing and the everyone else who wants to hold the movement together and preserve its strength. The dissidents want to oust the current head of the federation, John Sweeny, who has been in the job too long and, despite coming in at the head of a 1995 reform slate, was never terribly charismatic. The months and years to come will test the propaganda of both sides, but news tonight from CNN is that the dissident unions will boycott the convention. That means they will make good on their threat to leave the federation and form a rival organization.
