Waiting for the other shoe to drop

As expected the final word from the Mexican electoral commission’s recount of precinct summaries found Calderon the winner by the razor thin margin of 0.58%. Look for a big, big, big rally Saturday around 5 PM in Mexico City in which AMLO stakes out his case against the election. The Electoral Tribunal does have the power to order the recount every single ballot, whereas the IFE could only open ballot boxes if there as evidence of tampering or problems with the tally sheets.

There are, of course, editorials on both sides. The most balanced American commentary seems to be coming from the Washington Post’s Ceci Connolly’s Campaign Connexion blog. No fear mongering there, and that’s a relief. Surprisingly, the NYT called for a recount.

Meanwhile the US House and Senate are running hearings on immigration “reform,” and Bush appears to be pushing for something before the November elections.
